LUBBOCK – Farwell’s girls continued their strong run through the Texas Class 2A playoffs on Tuesday night, posting a 59-43 victory over Floydada for their 18th win in a row in a regional quarterfinal game played at Lubbock Cooper H.S.
The Lady Blue (32-3), ranked No. 1 this week in the 2A rankings by MaxPreps, advanced to a Friday night regional semifinal matchup against Christoval (30-7) at South Plains College in Levelland. The Lady Cougars, ranked 19th, brought a 14-game win streak into the match after edging Sundown 48-44 on Tuesday.
Junior Bella Jaime and senior Kennedi Richey scored 16 and 12 points, respectively, for Farwell, which led 13-6 at the quarter and broke away with a 15-8 run in the final stanza. Meantime, the Whirlwinds (27-5), who also came in with a 17-game winning streak, got 24 points from senior Zay Santos and 11 from junior Soriah Wickware.
In Texas boys bi-district (first-round) tilts on Tuesday:
Farwell 76, New Deal 36 – The Steers (24-9) extended their winning streak to 13 games – their previous loss was on Dec. 29 – after building a 28-point halftime lead against the Lions (11-20). Farwell advanced to a Friday area round game against Stratford at Amarillo H.S.
Nine players scored for Farwell, topped by junior Ryder McElroy with 16 and seniors Corey Stancell with 14 and Cesar Snyder with 12. Sophomore Nathan Brown paced New Deal with 14.
Floydada 79, Bovina 49 – At Dimmitt, the Mustangs’ season came to an end at 12-21 as the Whirlwinds (26-8) knocked down seven 3-pointers and put four players in double digits, led by senior Aiden Trevino and junior Braun Hobbs with 20 apiece. Also, junior Sergio Valadez finished with three 3-pointers and 17 points and junior Tyrean Henderson added 14.
Bovina was paced by 18 points from senior Miguel Lopez and 13 from sophomore Angel Lara.
In New Mexico boys clashes on Tuesday:
Dora 48, Floyd 25 – In District 4-1A, the visiting Coyotes (15-9, 6-1) jumped out to a 12-3 lead at the quarter in District 4-1A and rolled behind 20 points from senior Cole Kircher and 15 from junior Aaron Combs.
For the Broncos (7-13, 2-6), sophomore Edwin Gallegos netted seven points.
Grady JV 57, Clovis Christian 39 – The Bronchos broke away from a tie with a 22-10 run in the second quarter against the Eagles (8-13) at Grady.
Freshman Zander Ciancio tallied nine of his team-high 13 points in the second period for Grady JV, while freshman Konor King added 10 points. High scorers for CCS were senior Noah McKay with three 3-pointers and 17 points and freshman Brock Teune with four 3s and 14 tallies.
In another District 4-1A clash, Elida (14-10, 7-0) was awarded a forfeit win over Lake Arthur (0-12, 0-7).
In New Mexico girls play on Tuesday:
Elida 44, Lake Arthur 21 – The visiting Lady Tigers put some distance between themselves and Lake Arthur with a 13-4 run in the third frame.
Freshman Kembri Norman led Elida (13-12, 4-3) with 16 points and sophomore Charity Smith had 10. For the Lady Panthers (0-17, 0-7), freshman Ava Romero scored eight points.
Grady 54, Clovis Christian 27 – Junior Juanita Ramirez put in 16 points as Grady (11-12) built a 10-point lead at the quarter and coasted past the Lady Eagles.
Freshman Hannah McKay topped CCS (11-11) with 12 points.
Dora 68, Floyd 23 – In District 4-1A at Floyd, the Lady Coyotes (16-7, 7-0 district) locked up first place in the circuit behind six 3-pointers and 26 points from senior Bre’Ann Rodriguez, while freshman Karen Inge scored 17 and sophomore Dakota Jones added 12.
Senior Jona Baros had 13 points to lead the Lady Broncos (4-17, 2-6).
