Hounds post two-game sweep against Highlands

Eastern New Mexico University's baseball team opened a 12-0 lead through five innings on Sunday and routed New Mexico Highlands 12-6 to sweep their two-game non-league series at Greyhound Field.

ENMU (11-11) was outhit 11-9 by the Cowboys, but took advantage of seven walks, seven hit batsmen, six wild pitches and three errors for its second consecutive dominating win.

Junior designated hitter Demetrio Archuleta went 4-for-5, scoring four times and knocking in a run, while junior shortstop Willie Ponce singled and doubled in three at-bats, also drawing a walk and scoring twice.

The Greyhounds used eight pitchers in the contest, combining for eight walks and 12 strikeouts. The second of them, freshman right-hander Logan Kinter (1-0), worked a scoreless fourth and was credited with his first collegiate win.

Highlands (4-14), which came into the weekend off a four-game sweep at Oklahoma Panhandle State following an 0-12 start, scored three times in the sixth and three in the eighth. The Cowboys stranded 11 runners while the Hounds left nine.

ENMU returns to Lone Star Conference play this weekend with a four-game series against Cameron at Lawton, Okla., beginning with a 2 p.m. (MDT) nine-inning single game on Friday.

ENMU 13, Highlands 2 (Saturday) – Junior center fielder Tucker Gideon went 5-for-5 with a double and three RBIs and the Hounds blasted three home runs in an easy win over the Cowboys.

Junior Jonathan Baileys ended the tilt with a three-run, pinch-hit home run off reliever Sebastian Crispin with one-out in the bottom of the eighth. Meantime, Archuleta walloped a solo homer in the fourth and finished the contest 3-for-4, while senior right fielder Cooper Hamilton added a two-run shot later in the fourth.

The Hounds outhit Highlands 14-5. Freshman right-hander Marc Rios (2-0), the second of four ENMU hurlers, went two innings and allowed both Highlands runs but was credited with the victory.

Junior right-hander Josaiah Estrella worked the first four frames and allowed only two hits, striking out seven. Highlands struggled on the mound again, issuing six walks and hitting five ENMU batters.
