HOBBS – Clovis High’s girls finished third out of five full teams while the boys were sixth in a seven-team field in Monday’s season-opening Buck Brandon Invite at Rockwind Community Links.

Lovington took the girls team title at 379, 11 shots ahead of Roswell Goddard. The Lady Wildcats followed at 422, two strokes ahead of Hobbs, while Texico was fifth at 435.

The boys division was highly competitive, with New Mexico Military shooting 332 to edge out Goddard by one shot. Following were Lovington at 337, Lubbock Trinity Christian at 341, Hobbs at 344, the Wildcats at 366 and Roswell High at 382.

Individual medalists were Trinity Christian’s Levi Fisher at 2-over 74 for the boys and Hobbs’ Hannah Cupples at 82 for the girls.

Texico’s Liz Elam was second for the girls at 46-41 – 87. Other tallies for the Lady Wolverines included Sophie Schaap 50-52 – 102, Gabrielle Delarosa 58-53 – 111 and Sierra Hurst 66-69 – 135.

For the Lady Cats, sophomore Kylie Sprinkle led the way at 51-48 – 99, followed by senior Emilee Spears 54-49 – 103, sophomore Aahana Vhakta 48-55 – 103, junior Kayleigh Maldonado 61-56 – 117 and sophomore Julie Jasso 60-57 – 117.

Clovis Christian also had two entries – sophomore Lauren Weaver 58-56 – 114 and senior Kaprice Foote 58-59 – 117.

Senior Jett Stone survived a 9 on the fourth hole to lead Clovis’ boys at 46-42 – 88. Other scores for the Cats were closely bunched, with eighth-grader Zak Spearman shooting 49-43 – 92 and followed by senior Jacob Rowley 49-44 – 93, sophomore Gavin Anderson 44-49 – 93 and freshman Jakob Stone 42-51 – 93.

CCS senior Noah McKay actually led the boys’ tourney through 15 holes, but struggled the rest of the way and was fifth overall at 37-42 – 79. Freshman Brock Teune came in at 48-46 – 94.

Clovis squads return to action on April 2 in Roswell High’s Coyote Classic. Texico’s next outing is in the Great 8 at Ruidoso on Monday, while CCS is off until traveling to Tucumcari for the Rattler Invite on April 1.

Track – Clovis and Portales track squads braved the elements – for at least as long as they could – to compete in Friday’s Ron Singleton Invitational, hosted by Carlsbad H.S.

Both schools had their moments, but they spent most of the day dealing with cold, drizzly conditions.

As of Tuesday morning, no team scores were available from Carlsbad.

The CHS boys picked up a pair of wins in the meet, with senior Jeremiah Johnson winning shot put competition at 48 feet, 4 inches and junior Kyrese Phillips taking lone jump at 20-6. Junior Sammy Fuentes placed third for the Wildcats in the 800 in a time of 2 minutes, 6.06 seconds.

Clovis also won the 1,600 medley relay, but the Cats turned out to be the only team in the event.

“We expected to be able to run against Hobbs and Artesia,” CHS boys coach Mark Sena said.

Several teams, including the Cats and Lady Cats, left the meet early because of the weather and the fact that glitches with results delayed things a bit.

Meantime, the Lady Cats went 1-2-4 in the 300 hurdles with Skye Karoki (55.37 seconds), Liberty Kinkade (58.90) and Nyeisha Dean (59.82). Junior Gabrielle Foggie took first place in the 400 in 1:02.46, while freshman Brooke Newcomer won the 3,200 (13:01).

“I was really proud of the girls,” Lady Cats coach Avery Rasher said. “It got down to about 39 degrees, but we ran tough. I thought that was the biggest highlight of the meet.”

Clovis squads are slated to be in Rio Rancho on Friday for the Cleveland Invitational.

“That’ll be a good meet with high-level competition everywhere,” Sena said.

For the Portales boys, junior Tommy Lopez took first place in pole vault with a state-qualifying height of 12 feet while Manny Chavez won in javelin at 178-2.

Senior Olivia Low had a solid day in the throws for the Lady Rams, finishing second in discus (112-1) and fifth in shot put (29-11 ½). The 1,600 relay team of senior Daniella Rivera, sophomore J’Lynn Maestas and seniors Abby Ontiveros and Alondra Acosta won their event in 4:34.07, and senior Savana Heflin placed second in the 100 (13.0).

“For the weather being like it was, I thought our kids competed really well,” PHS coach Quintin Wilson said. “You’re not going to have your top times in weather like that.”

The Rams and Lady Rams return to action on March 23 in Tucumcari’s Rattler Relays.

Tennis – Clovis High’s squads ran into some stiff competition over the weekend in a quadrangular hosted by Hobbs H.S.

The Wildcats dropped 8-1 decisions to Seminole (Texas) and the host Eagles, while falling to Big Spring (Texas) 7-2. The Lady Wildcats posted a 6-3 victory over Big Spring while losing to Hobbs 6-3 and Seminole 7-2.

In the win over Big Spring, the Lady Cats went 4-2 in singles with junior Hansini Lingala at No. 2, senior Hannah Heath at No. 3, sophomore Gigi Greer at No. 4 and junior Emily Bjorkland at No. 5 all winning in straight sets. In doubles, Clovis won 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 at No. 1 with junior Madita Ewart and Lingala and posted a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 sophomore with Tara Zimmerman and eighth-grader Stella Greer.

Winners against Hobbs were Lingala, 6-2, 3-6, (10-4) over Natalie Vega at No. 2 singles; Heath, 6-3, 6-0 over Juliana Lopez at No. 3 singles, and Ewert and Lingala, 6-3, 6-2 over Juliana Lopez and Vega at No. 1 doubles. Wins against Seminole were by Ewart, 6-3, 6-4 over Haylee Villanueva at No. 1 singles, and by Lingala, 6-4, 7-5 over Bella Hare at No. 2 singles.

Winners for the Cats were junior Landon Wolf at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4 over Seminole’s Clancey Cope; junior Francesco Dell’Edera at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3 over Hobbs’ Yaisel Corrales and 6-3, 4-6, (10-7) against Big Springs, and Wolf and senior Cooper Harriman at No. 1 doubles, 2-6, 6-4, (10-5) over Big Springs.

Clovis squads were in Lovington for duals on Tuesday. They travel to Carlsbad for a tournament on Friday and Saturday.
