Hounds achieve four provisional qualifying marks

TUCSON, Ariz. – Four members of the Eastern New Mexico University track teams earned NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks over the weekend in the University of Arizona’s Willie Williams Classic.

For the women, senior Tamia Smith went 46 feet, 4 ¼ inches in shot put, good for fifth place. Her throw ranks ninth this spring in NCAA Division II and pulls her to within a foot of the top five.

Meantime, freshman Grizell Scarlett posted the third-fastest D-II time in the 100 so far, placing fourth in the event in 11.52 seconds.

Both were personal bests. Others who did likewise were freshmen Ambrosia Francis in the 100 (12.42) and 200 (25.62), Helena Carboo-Klutsey in the 400 (56.79) and Jha’Niah Johnson in hammer (119-2).

In the 400 relay, the Hounds were seventh overall in 47.61 seconds with freshman Jodian Stewart, sophomore Riley Midgett, Carboo-Klutsey and Francis.

For the men, senior Timothy Frederick ran a personal-best time of 20.72 to finish sixth while sophomore Alex Williams went 217-3 for fifth in javelin and is currently No. 5 in Division II this spring. Both were D-II provisional marks.

Other personal bests for the Hounds were turned in by junior Jude Murray in the 100 (10.72), senior Tre Buchanan in the 400 (48.61), sophomore Luis Holguin in pole vault (14-1 ¼), sophomore Noe Ybaben Burciaga in shot put (45-6 ½) and freshman Devin Gallegos in javelin (139-8).

ENMU squads host the Greyhound Invite on Saturday at Greyhound Stadium. Field events are slated to begin at 10 a.m., with track events starting at 11 a.m.

Women fourth at Ranger rodeo – ENMU’s women finished fourth as a team while the men were 11th over the weekend in the Ranger College rodeo, contested at Sweetwater, Texas.

Junior Shacie Marr split second and third in the long round of goat tying with a 6.7-second time, then won the short go at 6.5 seconds to post 165 points for ENMU’s women.

Also, senior Jordyn Everson finished in a six-way tie for seventh in the long round of breakaway roping with a 2.1-second run. She was seventh in the short go, but it wasn’t enough to score any points for the Hounds.

For the men, sophomores Zach Townsend (steer wrestling) and Cuoy McBride (team roping) made it to the short go.

Townsend posted a 3.9-second time in Friday’s long round, but wasn’t able to complete his second attempt. He finished with 55 points.

McBride partnered with West Texas A&M’s Kolton Smith to take seventh in the long round of team roping with a 6.4-second result. They were unable to complete a run in the short go and came away scoreless.

ENMU begins a run of three rodeos on consecutive weekends when it compete in the Western Texas College rodeo at Snyder, Texas, slated for April 4-6.
