DEXTER – A late rally fell short and Portales High’s softball team dropped a 9-7 decision to Raton on Saturday in the third-place game of Dexter’s Lindsey Callaway tournament.
Meantime, Clovis High scored early and often to rout Hatch Valley 19-2 for fifth place.
Senior Giana Marez had a home run as the Lady Tigers (5-3) built a 6-3 lead through five innings, then scored three times in the sixth and held off a pair of two-run innings by the Lady Rams (3-2). Senior Giana Marez had an inside-the-park home run for Raton.
Freshman Annaleah Lujan pitched all six innings for Portales and delivered a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a walk and an RBI. Sophomore Skyler Massey was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run, while junior Dawci Cordova went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs.
In the fifth-place tilt, Clovis got a three-run double from sophomore Amor Soto and a two-run single from freshman Gianna Cordova in an 11-run first. The Lady Wildcats (2-6) added eight more in the second and the game was called after three on the 15-run rule.
Sophomore Andrea Chavez had four hits for CHS, while freshman Kiara Noack worked in the circle. Senior Giselle Romero was named to the all-tournament team.
PHS returned to action on Tuesday night with a game at Roswell High, then travels to Santa Fe High on Friday. The Lady Cats’ next outing is in a noon doubleheader on Saturday against Roswell Goddard at Lady Wildcat Field.
