What was the business at 2208 N. Prince St. before it was Kelley’s Bar & Grill?
According to records at the Curry County Assessor’s Office, 2208 N. Prince Street was once “Shur Grow Behhen” Building Sales, originally owned by Leon Williams.
“That was in the 1950s early ’60s, I believe. The business name is what’s on the record. There are no specific dates on this information,” Curry County Chief Deputy Assessor Candace London said Tuesday.
The stadium at Clovis High School bears Williams’ name.
“Leon Williams was a car dealer and his business was downtown,” Lonnie Leslie said.
Leslie was with the Clovis Municipal School system from 1971 to 2004.
Leslie said Williams sold Cadillacs and his showroom was where the new courthouse addition stands.
“The Clovis High School stadium is named after him because he was a longtime member of the school board,” Leslie said.
“Gary and Jeanne Kelley took ownership of the property on North Prince in 1983,” London said.
London believes the Kelleys took what was already standing at 2208 N. Prince and remodeled it.
“It’s possible you may hear from readers who’ll have something to add to this,” London said.
