Obituary: John Chavez

John Chavez, age 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at Farwell Care and Rehabilitation Center. John was born on July 31, 1941, in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, to Juan and Dora Chavez. His family moved to Clovis in 1944.

In 1963, John started the Chavez Band with his brothers, where he was the lead singer and rhythm guitar player. Music was a significant part of his life, and he brought joy to many through his performances. He married Mary Ulibarri on July 15th, 1961.

John worked as a roofer in his early years before dedicating 36 years to the Clovis Municipal Schools maintenance department, where he was known for his hard work and commitment until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary Chavez; parents Juan and Dora Chavez; and siblings Isidro Chavez, Antonia Chavez, and Manuel Chavez.

John is survived by his children: John Chavez Jr., Gary Chavez (Jane), Angie Sandoval (Rick), Patsy Urban (Joe), Kenneth Chavez (Teresa), and Gina Casaus (B.J.). He is also survived by his brothers Alex Chavez (Trinnie) and Gilbert Chavez, sister-in-law Loretta Chavez, 15 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Farwell Care and Blue Bonnet Hospice from Friona, Texas, for their compassionate care.

Visitation for family and friends will be on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Chapel of Angels, 1430 Thornton St., Clovis, NM.

Recitation of The Most Holy Rosary will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 108 Davis St., Clovis, NM with Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10:30 AM. Burial will take place at Mission Garden of Memories, 2900 W. 7th St., Clovis, NM.

Pallbearers will be Ricardo Sandoval, Jacob Chavez, Garrett Chavez, and Benjamin Chavez.
