Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Our people: Scholarship winner heading for accounting, law school

Two months ago, Rebekah Warren was the subject of a story in The News.

She was one of more than 20 New Mexico students, 2024 graduates, who received a Daniels Scholarship.

So who is Rebekah Warren?

"I am a daughter of the Most High. The Lord has provided for me all my life," Warren said as she sat for an interview.

"I'm excited to start on my own and learn what it's like to live in the real world," she said.

Q: Are you from Clovis?

A: I was born and raised in Clovis. I'm a third-generation Clovis High School graduate.

I went to Zia Elementary School.

Q: Tell us about your family.

A: My parents met at Eastern New Mexico University.

They celebrated 25 years together this past week.

My dad is from Clovis, my mom is from Portales.

I have two younger brothers.

I love my brothers.

Q: So you've graduated, what are your plans now?

A: I plan to go to Texas Tech and study accounting.

After I graduate I plan on going to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Law School.

Q: Tell us about this national award, The Daniels Scholarship, you've received. What does it mean to you?

A: I applied for it.

When I received it there was a wave of relief.

I was worried about how I was going to pay for school.

I was also glad for my parents; it took the pressure of me going to college off their minds.

I'll only be going to Texas Tech for two years because I already earned my associate's degree in paralegal studies through the Early College High School program.

Q: When you are done with college what career do you want?

A: I plan on practicing family law.

I personally have great parents, a great father, but I know people who have lived in fatherless homes, abusive homes.

Living in a country that has the highest rate of fatherlessness in the world, I figured the best way to combat this and enforce the nuclear family is through the legal system.

Q: What's the worst smell in the world?

A: I think burnt toast.

Burnt food in general.

Q: What's the best smell in the world?

A: Outside in the morning.

Especially after it rains.

Q: What's your favorite food?

A: A bacon cheeseburger.

With fries.

Q: What's your favorite snack?

A: Anything chocolate, especially a Snickers bar.

And a Dr Pepper.

Q: Do you have a favorite place you like to vacation?

A: Three years ago I went with my best friend to Alaska. That's where she is from.

We went all over the state, pretty much.

That was like my favorite place ever.

I liked that everything was outdoors; we were always outside.

I want to buy a summer home there when I have the money.

Q: Is there some place in the world you'd really like to go?

A: I want to go to Israel.

I want to see all the historical sites.

And I want to walk where Jesus walked.

Q: What was the first concert you ever went to?

A: I went to Amarillo to see For King and Country.

Everyone who went with us said it was the best concert they'd ever been to.

Q: Who inspires you?

A: My mom, because she broke a lot of generational curses and showed me I don't have to just be a statistic.

Q: Do you have a favorite saying, Bible verse or quote?

A: Romans 5:8, "...while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
