A Melrose man died during a motorcycle crash near San Jon last Sunday.
Dustin Vineyard, 51, was traveling south on Highway 469 near milepost 17 that afternoon.
“For an unknown reason, the motorcycle left the roadway and hit a highway sign,” New Mexico State Police Public Information Officer Silver Wilson said.
“Vineyard was thrown from the motorcycle and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Office of the Medical Examiner.”
Wilson said Vineyard was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
According to dispatcher call logs, the accident first was reported at 2:52 p.m.
Muffley Funeral Home in Clovis handled funeral arrangements.
“He thrived on the thrill of riding motorcycles, dirt bikes and four-wheelers, where the roar of the engines brought him alive,” his obituary stated.
Vineyard is survived by his wife Amanda, two daughters, one brother, his father Dean and three grandchildren.
A friend of the family set up a GoFundMe.com campaign with a goal of $3,000.
