Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Ask the News - July 7

What’s with fuel prices in our area? Gas prices all around us are cheaper than Clovis and Portales. Why is this?

“It’s really the price of crude oil that drives the price of gas,” Daniel Armbruster said Wednesday.

Armbruster is corporate spokesperson and community relations person with the American Automobile Association, Texas/New Mexico.

Prices are also affected by transportation costs and state taxes, he said.

“The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in Curry County today (Wednesday) is $3.21, $3.27 in Roosevelt County, both below the New Mexico statewide average of $3.37 and well below the national average of $3.51,” Armbruster said.

According to the AAA website map of gas prices in New Mexico, Curry County along with Chaves, Lea, Union and Rio Arriba counties have the lowest average gas prices in the state.

Taking a look at Texas prices, the AAA website map shows an average of $3.10 per gallon.

Looking at prices in the directions many driving New Mexicans go in Texas, prices by the gallon are $3.06 in Parmer County, $3.11 in Bailey County, $2.94 in Deaf Smith County and $2.99 in Potter and Randall Counties (Amarillo area).

The price of a gallon of gas in Lubbock County is $2.98.

There’s a jump in price heading south of Muleshoe into Cochran County where the average price is $3.24 per gallon; further south in Yoakam County it’s $3.32 per gallon.
