Q&A: Changes coming to Curry County Fair

Editor's note: This is one in a continuing series of interviews with local officials. KC Messick is the general manager for the Curry County Events Center and Fairgrounds.

Q: Let's talk county fair dates. When does the fair start/end, and how does one go about entering crafts, critters, etc.?

A: Aug. 13-17. All entries will go through the Curry County 4H Extension Office.

Q: What are costs for entry this year? Are there discount nights for rides?

A: Gate prices for 4 and under are free. Other age groups are as follows:

• 5-12: $3 daily/$8 weekly pass

• 13 and over: $7 daily/ $18 weekly pass

• 60 and over: $6 daily/ $15 weekly pass

• Military: $5 daily/ $12 weekly pass

For ride nights, there's a discount on Tuesday if you bring two cans of food for the food bank.

You get $25 toward a wristband for the rides if you do that. On Wednesday, all rides are $1. On Thursday, all wristbands are $25 when they're regularly $35.

Q: What's new this year? What will fairgoers see they didn't see last year?

A: The biggest additions are going to be the handicap- accessible playground, the livestock pavilion, and the new mural. There will be local, live music Tuesday-Thursday.

Q: Tell us more about the new livestock pavilion.

A: Curry County has built a state-of-the-art indoor livestock pavilion, which will house the 4H/FFA livestock show, animals, and other projects during the Curry County Fair.

This will be a year-round facility that will be used for events throughout the year as well as facilitating horse stalls for our many equestrian events.

With Curry County's investment into building this facility, the fairgrounds will be able host and recruit many different and larger events into Clovis.

Q: There have been changes related to alcohol on the fairgrounds. Tell us about that.

A: We will have alcohol at the pavilion during live music Tuesday-Friday.

Q: Talk about security measures.

A: We will have the Curry County Sheriff's Office, Clovis Police Department, and Cannon Air Force Base Special Forces.

Q: What is your favorite fair food? And how much of it do you plan on having this year?

A: Pork kabobs. Daily.
