Clovis school board approves proposed curriculum

The Clovis Municipal School Board approved proceeding with the district’s proposed Career & Technical Education curriculum.

“We will begin the curriculum this August,” Leigh Morris, CMS Director of Curriculum and Assessment said after the meeting held on Tuesday.

After regular session, Board President Cindy Osburn texted her thoughts regarding the new curriculum.

“I like that CTE provides opportunities for students to acquire specific skills in high school that prepares them to go directly to work upon graduation,” Osburn wrote.

Osburn went on to describe the curriculum as engaging and staff embed employability skills in the daily student lessons.

“These employability skills are critical for success in the workplace,” Osburn wrote.

Osburn said the CTE curriculum was presented to the board at the June regular meeting as an introduction item.

“We had it for a month to review and then after our review we voted to approve the curriculum,” Osburn wrote.

The proposed curriculum is designed to help students plan careers that don’t necessarily require college degrees.

The curriculum is also designed to:

• Provide a road to success for high schoolers.

• Offer opportunities to personalize education based on career interests.

• Teach specific tech and career skills.

• Prepare students for careers in existing or developing careers.

• Combine academic and technical work in a real-world applied environment.

In other board business, Deputy Superintendent of Employee Services, Joe Strickland, told the board about position needs and openings in the district.

He spoke of the need for special education instructors.

Strickland also noted, as of Tuesday, there are 56 position openings in the district.

“For a staff of 1,250, it’s remarkable to have just 56 openings,” Strickland said.

Superintendent Renee Russ noted that this upcoming school year’s “convocation event” is scheduled for Aug. 6 and students return to class Aug. 8.

The next scheduled school board meeting is set for Aug. 27.
