Roosevelt County officials adopt budget for 2025

Roosevelt County commissioners on Tuesday adopted their 2024-2025 fiscal year budget of $20,480,450.92.

Last year’s budget was about $18.8 million, said County Treasurer Layle Sanchez.

The cost of doing business on most everything has increased, Sanchez said. This includes the cost of equipment, the cost of fuel, the cost to retain employees and pay their healthcare as well as their benefits.

“All those things play a role,” she said.

Laura Thompson, deputy county manager and finance administrator, who is the acting county manager during the interim before the new county manager, Annette Kirk, starts her position on Aug. 12, said the 2024-2025 budget includes $15.4 million in revenues. The rest of the revenue comes from federal and state grants and programs.

During the elected officials reports, Commissioner Paul Grider asked for a vote to change the time of the commission meetings from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. The county’s counsel Michael Garcia said the item needed to first appear on an agenda at a separate meeting, so the vote was postponed.

Also, under the department heads reports, County Clerk Mandi Park said an election exercise is scheduled Aug. 14-15 in Roswell. She said the deadline for ballot questions is Aug. 27.

Treasurer Sanchez during her report said the general fund cash balance for April was $4,309,068.44 and the ending cash balance was $4,447,496.14.

She said on Aug. 14, the state’s delinquent property tax sale will take place and a list of the properties is in her office for anyone who is interested.

In other business, Commission Chairman Tina Dixon said she had several constituents call about the county shredding program and all comments were positive.

In other business, the commission discussed whether to have a table at the Roosevelt County Tabling event on NM True Day at the state fair on Sept. 12.

The commission voted to have a table.

Commissioner Dennis Lopez said he wants to attend the event because it is an opportunity to network and a way to “advertise” the county.

Other agenda items included replats and the naming of subdivisions, which the commission passed without discussion.
