Stories about us: The teenager needs a truck

The goal for Manuel Romero, 17, is to purchase a truck that'll help him get to Texas. From there, he hopes to minister a wedding between his two friends.

The question is how could he amass the funds to do it.

His answer? A yard sale.

"I started a month ago," he said from his usual post; the sidewalk outside his grandparents' home on Clovis' Seventh street between Prince and Main.

He said he's made "$200" and has weathered the blistering sun that's resulted in "heat sickness sometimes."

While on this sidewalk, Romero has experienced some interesting moments along the way.

He said undercover police officers came through to ask about the unloaded BB gun he's selling.

As a marketing tactic, he's waved condoms at cars hoping to get their attention.

"I did get one person to stop by, like 'Oh you caught me from the condom,'" Romero said.

He used to give them out with each purchase, but he started running out.

Now marketing is contained to a nice smile and wave at passersby. He hopes that's enough to entice customers in the goods he's selling. On Sunday, that included a set of baseball caps, earbuds, a scale and the infamous BB gun.

He said he's fine if people don't pull over. But what does matter is that his waves are met with a "wave back," he said.
