Clovis approves work on roof, HVAC system

Clovis city commission on Thursday gave the OK to work on the city's Aquatics Center roof and Wellness Center heating/ventilation and air conditioning system, a project with a price tag of almost $1.851 million.

According to details in the meeting's agenda packet, the cost of the roof replacement will be $1.825 million.

The cost for the HVAC repair and replacement will be $25,825.

The roof and HVAC system were both damaged during 2023 hailstorms.

The Parks and Recreation Department has been working with a contractor, who has been working with the insurance company, according to the agenda packet.

In other business:

• Mayor Mike Morris praised the completion of the Commerce Way repaving.

City Manager Justin Howalt gave a report on the project and praised the public for seeking alternate routes during the project.

• Morris addressed weed growth in the city, reminding citizens to comply with city's weed code. Morris noted there are some areas owned by the city with weed overgrowth and the city is addressing the issue.

• Clovis resident Sarah Robertson took issue with the commission for moving to approve an anti-camping ordinance on city property. Robertson alleged the ordinance is punishing people for being poor. Morris said the ordinance was about "keeping our parks safe." Commissioners are scheduled to vote on the ordinance at their Aug. 22 meeting.

• Morris broke a 4-4 vote over creation of a modified animal ordinance, one aspect of which will require people who have an outside dog to have a shelter for the dog. Morris voted "no" on the matter and it failed. Commissioner Gene Porter said one of the problems with the ordinance is it's "so detailed."

Discussion was renewed, another vote was taken and the ordinance passed 5-3.

• Morris noted a number of commissioners attended the Aug. 9 Eastern New Mexico Water Conservation summit at the Curry County Events Center. Mayor Pro Tem Chris Bryant spoke of the importance of the event.

The next regular commission meeting will be at 5:15 p.m. Aug. 22 in the North Annex of the Clovis-Carver Public Library.
