New CCC president says Clovis was 'the right move'

New Clovis Community College President Jonathan Fuentes told trustees Wednesday that he made "the right move" to come to CCC.

Fuentes noted he has "been here one month and I have enjoyed meeting people."

"My whole family knows this is the right move for us," Fuentes said.

All five trustees were present for the meeting, which was a session for routine business.

Sandra Taylor-Sawyer and Dom Chairez of the Small Business Development Center gave the SBDC's annual report to the trustees.

Chairez described the SBDC as one of 19 SBDCs in the state.

Clovis' works with the SBDC at Santa Fe Community College.

The CCC center serves Curry, Roosevelt and De Baca counties. There is a satellite office in Portales.

Taylor-Sawyer outlined the services offered by the SBDC.

A common problem encountered by a number of businesses is not properly registering their new business.

"Some businesses say, 'Well we're an LLC,' but they're not because they haven't registered with the Secretary of State's office in Santa Fe. Others say they are open for business but they haven't secured the proper licensing from the city," Taylor-Sawyer said.

Taylor-Sawyer encouraged people to come to their office at CCC and learn how the SBDC may help them.

In other business:

• Fuentes offered the list of summer graduates to the board for approval.

"Summer 2023 we had 69 summer graduates, this summer we have 73," Fuentes said.

The board approved the list.

• The board approved emeritus status for former CCC Interim President Robin Jones.

Fuentes noted Jones had been with CCC for 27 years.

• During the "president's remarks" part of the session, Fuentes noted the campus "will be busy with faculty returning next week."

He said there will be one more day where extended hours will be offered for fall registration, Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

A convocation will be held Tuesday. The CCC campus will be closed from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. that day for that event.

"Classes begin Aug. 19," Fuentes said.

Trustees meet again at 8 a.m., Sept. 4 in the college's room 512.
