Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Clovis Community College is set to launch its Commercial Drivers License Program this month.
Registration for the class extends through Aug. 23. The first class is set for Aug. 26.
The college is partnering with Vehicle Safety Programs, L.L.C., based in Portales, which will provide the driving instruction.
The program contains three components: Theory taught at the college; instruction at the range on how to operate the vehicle; and a road test on the highway.
Elizabeth Chavez, director of Workforce Partnership and Continuing Education at CCC, said this program was discontinued "quite a few years ago," but is restarting.
Students who register to take the non-credit course must apply to the college and then fill out a continuing education registration form.
Chavez said she took the position in April, after having worked for the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions.
"Coming from a workforce background, I was aware of the need for CDL training," she said. "I made it one of my very first missions to see about opening a CDL class, because I knew there was a demand in this area."
"It's a way to get a job that pays good money without having to get an extensive education," she said.
Douglas Morrison, owner of Vehicle Safety Programs, which attracts students from all over the country, said the program will provide a way for people who can't ordinarily afford the instruction, to afford it.
"It will open incredible doors for them. Truck driving is incredibly high-paying right now," Morrison said.
Chavez said the college has a grant to assist students with partial funding. The college also has a payment plan. And, they accept third-party employer sponsored payments.
The college is exploring ways to use the Federal Student Loan program to pay for the tuition.
She said the two-to-four weeks program cost varies depending on the type of license the student wants to earn.
A CDL A class costs $4,500 - full class.
A CDL B costs $2,900 -- local driving such as a dump truck.
A CDL C costs $2,400 - a passenger endorsement license, such as to drive limousine.
She said the program, which can accommodate 70 students, currently has 14 inquiries and "it is filling up fast."
A grand opening ceremony is set for 10 a.m. on Friday in front of the Educational Services Building.
