A police pursuit that started in Portales ended early Monday afternoon near Clovis High School.
Tevin Lee King, wanted on armed robbery charges stemming from a home invasion in Albuquerque, was arrested after his vehicle crashed on Columbia Lane.
Police said no injuries were reported during the pursuit.
According to a Clovis police news release:
Members of the Region V Drug Task Force were contacted and requested to assist in locating King, who was possibly traveling to Clovis from Hobbs in a black Chevrolet sedan.
Officers left Clovis to drive in the direction of Hobbs to help try and locate the car.
About 12:15 p.m., the vehicle was seen in the parking lot of a Stripes Convenience Store in Portales. Agents from the U.S. Marshals Service attempted to contact King, but the vehicle fled police.
The car was located entering the Clovis city limits at 12:45 p.m. Monday. Officers attempted to stop the car, but it fled around the city until the crash near the high school.
Portales police posted on their Facebook page that the pursuit “was not initiated by any Portales officers.” The post stated U.S. Marshals Service officials “were attempting to apprehend a fugitive.”
Clovis Municipal Schools issued news releases stating the high school was “briefly placed in Secure & Teach” about 1 p.m. and again at 2 p.m. “due to police activity in the area surrounding the campus.”
The Secure & Teach lasted less than five minutes before regular instruction was resumed. A second “Secure & Teach” instruction was issued just before 2 p.m. Monday “while school officials work with law enforcement to investigate comments reported by students.
“The comments surfaced in connection to an earlier Secure & Teach, which was initiated due to police activity in the area surrounding the campus,” school officials stated in the release.
Regular activity had resumed at the high school by 2:15 p.m.
Police said additional charges were expected to be filed against King in connection with the pursuit.
