RUIDOSO – Bailey Greenwalt was happy to see her Portales High volleyball team win its season opener on Thursday night – while knowing the Lady Rams still have plenty of room for improvement.
PHS posted a 25-22, 27-25, 25-21 victory over Ruidoso as junior middle hitter Skyler Massey collected 13 kills.
"There (were) a lot of encouraging things," Greenwalt said. "It'll take a little time for us to figure out how to work together."
Portales led most of the way, but couldn't shake the Lady Warriors, who were also playing their opener.
Ruidoso led 23-18 in Game 2, but the Lady Rams pulled it out by finishing on a 9-2 run.
"I was really proud of (her team)," Greenwalt said. "To see them fight back was really encouraging."
Senior setter Myleigh Banda just missed a double-double with nine digs and 32 assists. Senior Angel Ornelas added a team-high 10 digs.
Portales welcomes Hobbs for a 6:30 p.m. start on Tuesday in its home opener at the Ram Athletic Center.
PHS falls in girls soccer lidlifter – The Lady Rams hung around for a long time on Wednesday in their season opener at the PHS soccer field, but Las Vegas Robertson broke away with four goals in the final 18 minutes for a 5-1 victory.
Senior forward Amiyah Bencomo and sophomore forward/defender A.J. Flores scored two goals apiece for the Cardinals, who were also playing their season opener.
"We completely dominated the game for the first 20 minutes," first-year Lady Rams coach Laci Lozoya said. "If we can extend that, I think we'll be able to dominate against better teams than Robertson."
PHS got on the board first in the 12th minute on a goal by junior Addyson Mayberry, assisted by J'Lynn Maestas. The Lady Cardinals tied it when Flores broke through with about eight minutes left in the half.
Junior defender Payton Woolf added a tally for the Lady Cardinals midway through the second half.
Portales was at home again on Saturday with a boys/girls doubleheader against Ruidoso. The Lady Rams' next outing is on Sept. 4 at West Las Vegas.
