Clovis Apartments scene of homicide

Multiple gunshots were exchanged outside the Clovis Apartments late Tuesday night, leaving one teenager dead and another on the run from police.

Demetrius Anderson, 16, was shot multiple times and pronounced dead soon after arrival at Plains Regional Medical Center.

Court records show multiple witnesses identified the shooter as Giovanni Brown-Johnson, 18, who fled soon after the shooting, possibly in a white Buick with a temporary registration tag.

An arrest warrant charging Brown-Johnson with murder shows a friend of the victim fired multiple gunshots at the suspect as he ran away.

Enrique Padilla, who is not charged in connection with the slaying, “grabbed a brown gun from the victim’s waist band and returned fire at Gio who shot again at Enrique and the victim as he was fleeing the scene,” the court record shows.

Police Capt. Robert Telles said late last week Brown-Johnson had not been located and officials did not know where he might be.

Court records do not indicate what led to the shooting, which was reported to police about 11:40 Tuesday night. Video surveillance shows Anderson sitting or leaning on the hood of a parked car in the parking lot outside Building 5 as he talked with other people prior to the gunfire.

One witness told police Brown-Johnson grabbed Anderson’s hair and then pointed a gun at Padilla. After telling Padilla to “get back,” the suspect released Anderson before shooting him, the witness told police.

Padilla then grabbed his friend’s gun and gave chase to the suspect, firing multiple shots in his direction, the record shows.

Tuesday’s slaying was the first in Clovis since a Texas man is accused of killing two Texico women at Ned Houk Park on May 3. Alek Collins is awaiting trial on federal charges in Albuquerque.
