After claiming a seesaw first-game win, Portales High's volleyball team went on to take control en route to a 28-26, 25-15, 25-21 victory over Hobbs in the Lady Rams' home opener on Tuesday night at the Ram Athletic Center.
"I don't think anybody had a lead of more than three points in the first game," PHS coach Bailey Greenwalt said. "It was very much back-and-forth the whole game."
Senior setter Myleigh Banda compiled team highs of 13 digs, 26 assists and three aces for the Lady Rams (2-0).
"She's our only setter, but she's very consistent," Greenwalt said.
Tied at 19-19 in the opening set, the teams alternated the lead the rest of the way. PHS fought off a pair of set points before finishing it out with a 3-0 run.
"The momentum definitely shifted after that first game," Greenwalt said.
Portales was in control most of the second set before outlasting the Lady Eagles (0-1) in the third.
Junior Molly Ainsworth led PHS in kills with eight, while senior Addison Ainsworth and junior Skyler Massey each posted five kills. Molly Ainsworth and Massey each notched a pair of blocks.
Senior Angel Ornelas collected 12 digs and a pair of aces, while senior Tya Rippee had eight digs.
"It was a good win, but by no means was it a great game by us," Greenwalt said. "We can always make improvements."
The Lady Rams were scheduled for another home match on Saturday against Las Vegas Robertson. They travel to Moriarty for an eight-team tournament on Friday and Saturday.
