Cats, Lady Cats notch victories

To put it mildly, the Clovis High boys soccer team came to life in the second half on Tuesday night.

Locked in a scoreless tie with New Mexico Military at the intermission, the Wildcats put four goals on the board in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza and cruised to a 5-0 victory over the Colts at Leon Williams Stadium.

Sophomore forward/midfielder Rony Enamorado notched a hat trick while senior forward Ihab Mesbah posted two goals and a pair of assists for the Cats (5-2).

"It was back and forth in the first half," Clovis coach Greg Trujillo said. "They (Colts) had some looks.

"(CHS senior goalkeeper) Angel Avila had a couple of good saves in the second half."

Fouled inside the 18-yard box, Mesbah broke the ice on a penalty kick goal about a minute into the second half.

Enamorado then got the next three goals for a 4-0 advantage over NMMI (0-2) with 30 minutes left. Mesbah collected assists on Enamorado's first and third tallies, with sophomore forward/midfielder Aldo Herrera getting one on the middle goal.

Mesbah finished the scoring about 10 minutes later, assisted by junior forward/midfielder Julien Salinas. Avila ended the night with seven saves.

"It was a good all-around game for everyone," Trujillo said.

He added that freshman midfielder Ryan Worley helped set the Cats up by getting the ball to midfielders to attack.

The Cats returned to action on Saturday at Lovington. Their next outing is on Tuesday in a 4:30 p.m. start against Pojoaque at Yucca Soccer Complex.

Clovis 4, Lovington 1 (girls) – The Lady Cats notched their third win of the season over Lovington on Tuesday at Lovington – all by the same score.

Junior Ava Evans posted a first-half hat trick to send the Lady Cats (3-4) into the break leading 3-0. Her second goal came on an assist from junior Sophie Roberts.

"Our possession game was a lot better," CHS girls coach Ray Ramirez said. "That was the one thing I asked the girls to improve on.

"We controlled the game pretty much."

Junior Andrea Chavez added a second-half goal with about 26 minutes left. Lovington (1-5) got on the board with about 12 minutes remaining on a goal from senior defender Kiarra Reza.

The Lady Cats were in Farmington over the weekend, facing the Lady Scorpions on Friday and Piedra Vista on Saturday. Tuesday, they host Artesia in a 6 p.m. start at Leon Williams Stadium.
