Police investigate animal cruelty charges

Clovis police are investigating an animal cruelty complaint after newborn puppies were tossed in a dumpster in the 300 block of Hickory Street just after noon on Tuesday.

Three puppies were found alive; one was deceased, police said.

“Animal Control received a call for service about found puppies. The caller relayed the puppies were possibly injured and were crying,” according to a police news release.

The puppies were wrapped in a white plastic bag, police said.

Animal control officers were provided with video of the dumpster and observed a brown SUV driving through the alley, pulling up to the dumpster and throwing a bag into the dumpster.

The driver, a male, then backed out of the alley and left the area, police said.

The puppies still had their eyes closed and still had their umbilical cords. Animal control officers were able to locate fosters to bottle feed the puppies.

Police are asking anyone with information on the suspect contact them at 575-769-1921.

Anonymous tips can be provided Curry County Crime Stoppers at 575-763-7000.
