Portales High's volleyball was so close to a sweep on Tuesday night, and yet so far.
After winning the first set against Roswell High at the Ram Athletic Center, the Lady Rams had three set points with 24-21 leads in Games 2 and 3, but couldn't hold on.
At the end, they were saddled with a 17-25, 28-26, 26-24, 25-19 setback against the Lady Coyotes (5-1).
"It was a very tight match," PHS coach Bailey Greenwalt said. "It was a really fun (match). I would say we were the better team for about 85 percent of it.
"(Losing it) is frustrating on our end, but there was some really good volleyball played."
Junior middle hitter Skyler Massey had a monster night for PHS (4-2) with a personal-best 25 kills to go with four blocks, 10 digs and two aces. Senior Angel Ornelas added a personal-best 30 digs with two aces.
"Skyler was unstoppable," Greenwalt said. "And it was a really good night for Angel. She serve-received well and dug well."
Senior setter Myleigh Banda compiled another double-double with 15 digs and 35 assists. Junior Molly Ainsworth also had four blocks, junior Dawci Cordova combined 12 digs and three aces and senior defensive specialist Tya Rippee added 16 digs.
PHS now enjoys a little break in the schedule, with the next outing coming on Sept. 23 in a 6:30 p.m. outing at Roswell High.
Soccer – Both PHS squads were beaten by host Alamogordo on Thursday in the opening round of a four-team tournament.
The Lady Rams dropped a 3-1 decision to Alamo (6-1), while the boys lost 7-2 to the Tigers (3-3).
Senior Kadynce Reeves scored in the first half for Portales (3-4) and the teams went into the intermission tied 1-1. Alamo, though, added a pair of goals after play resumed.
Junior netminder Lissette Gomez had 13 saves for PHS, which played for third place on Saturday.
Portales will be in Albuquerque for Sandia Prep's Sundevil Invitational this weekend, taking on St. Michael's at 4 p.m. on Friday in their opening clash.
In Thursday's boys matchup, the Tigers ran out to a 5-0 halftime lead before the Rams (4-2) played them evenly the rest of the way.
Portales took on New Mexico Military (2-4) on Saturday for third place.
The Rams host Clovis at 6 p.m. on Tuesday night. They will also be at Sandia Prep this weekend for the Ben Kivitz Invitational, facing Rio Grande in a 4 p.m. tilt at on Friday.
