Cats stretch winning streak with 2-0 victory

LAS CRUCES – Clovis High boys soccer team kept things rolling on Saturday, posting a 2-0 victory over Las Cruces High at Field of Dreams.

The Wildcats (8-2) extended their winning streak to four matches, getting goals from sophomore forward/midfielder Damien Navarrette in the first half and senior forward Ihab Mesbah in the second. Assists were credited to junior forward/midfielder Julien Salinas and senior goalkeeper Angel Avila, respectively, the latter on a long clearing pass.

“It’s one of the best starts we’ve had in a long time,” 17-year CHS boys coach Greg Trujillo said.

Clovis held the Bulldawgs (3-6) to just four shots on goal. The Cats posted a 9-2 margin in corner kicks.

Trujillo said his squad was in control most of the way.

“It was pretty much one-sided,” he said. “We dominated in both halves. We had a lot of opportunities.

“It was a pretty good atmosphere for the game.”

The Cats returned to action on Tuesday with a match at Portales. On Saturday, they travel to Albuquerque for a 2 p.m. clash against Del Norte.

Girls fall to Lady Demons – At Santa Fe, the Lady Demons put their Saturday tilt against CHS out of reach with a goal in the final two minutes and claimed a 2-0 victory.

Sophomore midfielder Autumn Moore gave Santa Fe High (6-2) the lead with the day’s first tally midway through the opening stanza. Senior midfielder Chloe Anaya got the clincher down the stretch.

Lady Wildcats coach Ray Rodriguez said his squad (3-7-2) should have done better, but noted the team was a bit shorthanded.

“I was missing three of my girls due to different circumstances,” he said. “(But) we had our opportunities to put this game away. We had three clean opportunities (to score, but) we just didn’t put the ball in the net.”

Clovis managed just one goal and allowed only three during a week in which it went 0-1-2.

On Thursday, the Lady Cats are back in action when they welcome Roswell Goddard to Leon Williams Stadium for a 6:30 p.m. match.
