Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Aucutt's Paint Store celebrated its 85th anniversary in July.
Tisha Brothers runs the place now, an occupation that started with her great-great-grandfather G.C. Williams on Main Street, Clovis, back in 1939.
Did she train for the job? How did she come into running a paint store?
"I grew up around the business, I learned from my dad and my education," Brothers said.
Brothers, also director of the Clovis Volleyball Association for more than 20 years, told The News more about herself in a conversation in her office at her store at 2000 Mitchell St.
Q: What was your family's big thing when you were growing up?
A: Going to a cabin in Tres Ritos in Taos County.
No TV, no WiFi, we were always exploring somewhere, riding motorcycles, riding horses, just enjoying family and nature.
Q: Describe yourself in one word.
A: Quiet. I don't know why, I'm just quiet and reserved.
Q: What do you remember about growing up in Clovis?
A: Being able to walk to friends' houses, playing outside until almost dark. It felt safer.
Q: Tell us about your family.
A: My husband is Zane Brothers. He owns All Star Dents.
My daughter Carissa and son-in-law Junior work with Zane and they have our grandson Kyson and granddaughter Maliyah.
Daughter Dakota and son-in-law Brendon live in Littleton, Colo., and work at Lockheed Martin.
My dad is Bob Aucutt and my mom was Carolyn Burch.
Q: What did you want to be when you grew up?
A: A veterinarian.
I figured out I liked dealing with numbers and people more than animals.
Q: What's so great about your favorite sport?
A: That's volleyball.
You can play as long as you want to and as long as your body stays put together and healthy.
I discovered volleyball in junior high, at Marshall.
At first I thought it was for sissies, but I grew to love the strategy of the game.
Q: What's your idea of a perfect day?
A: Not being at work.
Q: What's your favorite smell?
A: Mountain rain.
Q: Where is the best place for a vacation?
A: Kauai in Hawaii.
It's very laid back, very relaxing.
Q: What's your favorite dish?
A: My mom's mushroom steak and Zane's steak fingers.
Q: What do you do when you're not working?
A: Although volleyball does take up a lot of my time that is not what I enjoy most.
I enjoy going to my grandson Kyson's football, baseball and basketball games; spending time with my granddaughter, Maliyah, and spending vacation with my girls and their families.
Q: Tell us about your greatest individual accomplishment.
A: My two amazing daughters.
Q: Who's invited to your fantasy dinner party?
And what's for dinner?
A: Jesus. It would be an honor to be in his presence.
I'd also like to have all the people in my family there who have "gone on" before me.
Dinner depends on what Zane wants to cook.
Q: What's your favorite saying?
A: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
