Zia scores prestigious Blue Ribbon honor

Clovis’ Zia Elementary School on Monday was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School, just one of 356 schools in the nation – and one of three in New Mexico -- receiving the designation.

“We couldn’t be prouder of the entire Zia Elementary community,” Clovis schools Superintendent Renee Russ told The News in an email. “The staff, students, and families have worked hard to create a dynamic and supportive learning environment.

“Earning the National Blue Ribbon School award is a reflection of their dedication and commitment to both academic achievement and personal growth.”

Russ also said the award “sets a powerful example for our entire district.”

“It’s a reminder of what can be achieved when high standards, collaboration, and a strong sense of community come together.”

Zia Principal Kaylene Davis attributed the honor to “unwavering commitment to excellence.”

“Each day I see my staff and students work so hard.  They deserve this. I am so very proud of my school,” Davis said.

Russ said Zia was nominated for the award last school year and spent the spring completing a rigorous application process.

Zia Elementary serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade.

It’s just the third school in the Clovis Municipal School district to earn a Blue Ribbon designation, joining Mesa Elementary in 2001 and 2016 and the former Ranchvale Elementary in 2010.

Only two other New Mexico schools received a 2024 Blue Ribbon designation -- White Sands School at White Sands Missile Range and Ventana Ranch Elementary School in Albuquerque.

“The National Blue Ribbon Schools Award is a testament to the exceptional achievements of students and educators at each of these schools,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. 

“The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools are raising the bar for our nation’s students, serving as models for effective teaching and intentional collaboration in their schools and communities. As we celebrate their achievements, let us look to these schools for inspiration as we champion education as the foundation of a brighter future for every child.”

The Blue Ribbon website reports schools are nominated for the award by the chief state school officer in each state. Schools must also meet their state’s annual measurable performance targets. Only 421 schools nationwide may be nominated, according to the website.

Awards are presented in two categories, according to the website:

“Exemplary High Performing” public schools have their state’s highest high school graduation rates and the highest achieving students (the top 15%) in English and mathematics, measured by state assessments.

“Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing” public schools have made the greatest advances (top 15%) in closing student subgroup achievement gaps in English and mathematics over the past three to five years, measured by state assessments.

Zia received the “Exemplary High Performing” award.

Davis said Zia will celebrate the award with a “Blue Day” on Oct. 10 that will coincide with a fall carnival set for that evening.
