Opinion: 'Do unto others' taking new meaning

Some form of the Golden Rule can be found in many ancient writings, including: the New Testament, the Talmud, The Koran and The Analects of Confucius.

The Golden Rule states, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Politicos have never grasped this concept.

When the New York Times decided during the 2016 presidential campaign that Donald Trump was so beyond the pale that he no longer deserved the equal treatment afforded other candidates, they began to openly castigate him in their publication. This began four years of 90% plus negative media coverage for Trump while he was in office and continued for the next four, that includes today, with more than 80% negativity.

Trump was enthroned as “the other.”

In trying to explain the visceral hatred for Trump, many people will respond that, “It’s personal.” If pressed further as to what Trump did to them personally, they draw a blank. In almost every case, whether it’s, “He’s tearing up the Constitution” or “He’s destroying democracy,” no solid evidence of specifics is proffered.

One friend of mine tells of discussing Trump with his sister, who disliked Trump intensely. When he finally cornered her on the exact cause of her dislike, she remarked, “I can’t stand his hair.”

Political adversaries enhance these generalizations with productions like the Biden September 2022 television speech with a dark, demonic background where an angry Joe Biden trumpets from the podium, “Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans are a threat to the very soul of this country.”

On a more disturbing note, there have been two assassination attempts on Donald Trump in the last three months. What bothers me about these attempts is the cavalier way media and the public are treating them.

We should remember that last June, in Butler, Pa., we came very close to watching a presidential candidate’s head explode on live TV. After the second attempt we get something called the Downtown Press telling us, “Stop Calling it an Assassination Attempt. Shots rang out at Trump’s Golf Course yesterday, news flash, there’s thousands of guns being shot every second in this country, one just happened to be near Trump.”

Most despicable of all, after the second attempt, Rachel Vindman, whose husband testified against Trump during his first impeachment, posted, “No ears were harmed. Carry on with your Sunday afternoon.”

Sadly, we now adhere to, “Do unto others before they do unto you.”
