Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Xcel Energy’s New Mexico customers will soon see the benefits of an improved, more advanced electric grid as the company begins installing smart electric meters at homes and businesses.
According to an Xcel news release, installation begins this week as part of a multiyear project to bring customers “cleaner, safer and more reliable energy through advanced grid technology.”
Mike McLeod, an Xcel regional manager, described
“smart meters” as “the starting point for a more advanced grid, improving reliability and providing new tools and technology to help customers lower their bills.”
According to the release, the first meters will be installed in Tucumcari starting this week.
The company plans to install more than 120,000 of the new smart meters in Xcel’s New Mexico service area over the next two years. Clovis, Portales and Texico will also be receiving the smart meters.
One plus of the smart meters is to help Xcel restore power more quickly after an outage, the release stated.
“Smart meters also give customers near real-time energy use data that they will be able to access through the company’s My Account feature at xcelenergy.com or through the Xcel Energy app,” the release stated.
