ENMU soccer squads top Sul Ross

The Eastern New Mexico University soccer teams picked up shutout wins over Sul Ross State on Saturday, the women winning a Lone Star Conference clash 1-0 at Alpine, Texas, while the men posted a non-league victory over the Lobos 2-0 at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium.

Senior midfielder Meghann Wingsutton put the Greyhounds on the board in the 27th minute in the women’s contest. Junior forward Mariana Gonzalez Jimenez earned the assist on the play.

Both sides had scoring opportunities the rest of the way, but the defenses were equal to the challenge.

The goal was the first of the season for Wingsutton and the assist the first for Gonzalez Jimenez.

ENMU (2-3-1, 1-1 LSC) put up a season-best 11 shots on goal in the match, with goalkeeper Benita Carson making 10 stops for the Lobos (2-4, 0-2). ENMU freshman Rosie Willmott Joyce stopped all seven Lobos shots on goal to register her second shutout of the campaign.

It was the first all-time meeting between the Hounds and Sul Ross, which joined the LSC this season.

The Hounds resume LSC play tonight with a 6 p.m. (MDT) start at Lubbock Christian.

In the men’s matchup, junior defender Pablo Nodar took a feed from junior forward Alexander Meres and beat Sul Ross freshman keeper Benjamin Aviles to put the Hounds (2-2-3) on the board in the 31st minute.

ENMU’s insurance goal came in the 66th minute when junior defender Arthur Macri worked his way past a handful of Lobos defenders to beat Aviles from just inside the 28-yard box.

Senior goalkeeper Catalin Nastuta earned the shutout, stopping four shots on goal by the Lobos (4-3).

On Saturday, the Hounds begin conference action with a 1 p.m. start against St. Mary’s at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium.
