PHS squads drop matches in Roswell

ROSWELL – Juniors Olivia Rossow and Aubrie Bolanos each scored a pair of second-half goals and Roswell Goddard blanked Portales 4-0 on Saturday in the girls District 4-4A opener for both squads.

The Lady Rams (5-7 overall) held their own for a half against the Lady Rockets (9-5-1), but they couldn’t keep pace after play resumed. Still, PHS coach Laci Lozoya said she was encouraged by her squad’s play.

“We’re excited for the next time we play them,” she said. “We didn’t have our full roster this time.”

The teams meet again on Oct. 12 at the PHS pitch.

Junior goalkeeper Lissette Gomez was kept busy by Goddard, posting 15 saves in the matchup.

The Lady Rams return to action with a 3 p.m. district tilt at home against Artesia on Thursday.

Boys – In non-district play on Saturday, Roswell High opened a 5-0 lead at halftime and went on to a 9-1 victory over PHS.

Seven players scored for the Coyotes (10-4), including senior Diego Guillen with a hat trick. Roswell High posted a 20-3 margin over the Rams (4-8) in shots on goal.

PHS was slated to host Artesia in its district opener on Tuesday. Next up for the Rams is a noon district tilt against Lovington on Saturday at the PHS pitch.
