Texico stays perfect, tops Dons 24-14

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Senior Alex Fuentes scored a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter and Texico remained unbeaten for the season with a 24-14 victory over West Las Vegas on Friday night.

Leading 8-0 at halftime, Fuentes scored on runs of 8 yards and 1 yard in the third period to extend the margin to 24-8 over the Dons (3-3), ranked fifth by MaxPreps in Class 3A. The Wolverines (5-0), ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, took the lead in the second quarter on an interception return for a touchdown by senior Missael Buendia.

Fuentes added 2-point conversion runs after each of Texico's three scores. The Wolverines piled up 290 yards, including 241 on the ground with Fuentes carrying 30 times for 164 yards.

Senior Devaughn Kensey scored on a 19-yard pass from senior C.J. Perea for West Las Vegas, while senior Jonathon Gonzales ran for West Las Vegas' first score in the third quarter, making it 16-8 while senior Devaughn Kensey caught a 19-yard TD from senior C.J. Perea for the game's final tally with less than a minute remaining.

In other Friday area football:

Bovina 28, Smyer 12 – At Smyer, the Mustangs broke a 12-12 tie with 16 points in the final 1 ½ minutes to turn back the Bobcats.

Junior Angel Lara scored on a 15-yard run with 1:27 to go, then added a 2PAT run for a 20-12 lead. After a Bobcats turnover, Lara went over from 14 yards out with 45 seconds left.

The final points came on a safety, with Bovina sophomore Isaac Tavera dragged down Smyer's Ryann Gutierrez in his own end zone.

Lara, who finished with 219 yards on 27 carries, added a 32-yard run early in the second frame to stake the Mustangs (2-3) to a 12-6 lead. Smyer (0-5) tied it on the final play of the half on senior Rylan Smith's 37-yart interception return.

Smith caught a 31-yard pass from quarterback Skyler Pond to stake the Bobcats to an early lead, but the Mustangs quickly tied it on senior Luis Avila's 5-yard scoring run. Avila finished with 16 carries for 110 yards as Bovina outgained Smyer 364-72 and posted a 21-4 margin in first downs.

Melrose 52, Mesilla Valley 12 – At Las Cruces, the Buffaloes (6-0, 2-0 8-man District 3) built a 48-6 halftime lead and cruised past the previously unbeaten host SonBlazers (5-1, 2-1).

Melrose scored seven touchdowns and added 2-point conversions after each one. Senior Brayden Eldridge opened the scoring with a 25-yard run, then caught a 35-yard TD pass from senior Josiah Roybal.

Roybal added scoring runs of 6 yards and 1 yard, and threw a 6-yard TD pass to twin brother Josh Roybal. Junior Jaxon Odom notched the other tallies on runs of 32 and 45 yards.

Mesilla Valley got a 1-yard TD run from senior Davis Coyle early in the second frame, and Coyle added a 20-yard TD pass to sophomore Mark Dwyer in the fourth stanza.

Roy/Mosquero 26, Dora 20 – Trailing 26-7, the host Coyotes scored twice in the final five minutes before the Blue (4-1, 2-1 District 6-1A) survived a last-second pass attempt into the end zone.

Dora (2-2, 1-2) took a 7-6 lead in the second quarter on a 40-yard run by senior Aaron Combs and a 1-point conversion pass from sophomore Carson Kircher to senior Ashton Davis. Seniors Gunner Tipton and sophomore Timothy Neal had the late TDs for the Coyotes, with Kircher throwing a conversion pass to Davis on the former tally.

Grady 56, New Mexico School for the Deaf 6 – Sophomore Zander Ciancio, who threw a pair first-quarter touchdown passes, caught a 24-yarder from sophomore Hays Rush early in the third period to end the 6-man District 1 game at Grady on the 50-point rule. The score was set up by an interception from senior Deakin Ragland.

Ciancio's TD tosses covered 20 yards to sophomore Caden Croy and 28 yards to Ragland, both in the opening stanza. Ragland also had rushing TDs of 14 and 23 yards in the period as the Bronchos (5-1, 2-1 6-man District) opened a 26-0 lead.

In the second frame, senior Chevy Dickson scored on a 14-yard run and sophomore Gavin West and Rush had fumble returns of 29 and 25 yards for TDs in the second frame. Ciancio added four 2PAT kicks for the Bronchos.

The Roadrunners (2-3, 1-3) got their touchdown early in the second canto on a 6-yard pass from junior Tyler Todorovic to junior Alex Gonzalez-Lopez.

Post 59, Farwell 6 – At Post, the unbeaten (5-0) Antelopes posted 509 total yards and were in control from start to finish.

Senior Alonzo Lozano put the Steers (1-4) on the board late in the opening stanza on a 5-yard run, making it 17-6. Senior quarterback Jonathan Armstrong ran for 40 yards on 14 attempts and completed 10-of-24 passes for 166 yards, including three for 70 yards to junior Hudson Agee.

In another 6-man 1 game on Friday, Logan (6-0, 4-0) defeated Floyd (1-4,0-4) 52-0 while in 6-man non-district play at Whiteface, Texas, Elida (4-2) dropped a 48-0 decision to the Antelopes (5-0).
