Our people: Garrick Sherrod wants to 'change lives'

Garrick Sherrod is the man coordinating the Clovis Municipal Schools Elementary Youth Programs.

He told The News on Thursday one of the things he wanted to be when he grew up was "someone who could impact and change lives."

Sherrod shared more about his life:

Q: Where did you grow up?

A: I grew up in Norfolk, Va. That's where my mom and the rest of the family on her side are from.

Q: What's the difference between there and here?

A: The pace out here.

Things are faster in Norfolk. Here, things are homey, things are slower, what's going on around you is easier to process.

Q: What did you want to be when you grew up?

A: I always wanted to be a basketball player or someone who could impact and change lives.

Retired Philadelphia 76ers National Basketball Association player Allen Iverson inspired me.

He's from Virginia. He's a hall of fame basketball player.

He never let his height define him. He was undersize, 6-feet tall, and he has a big heart.

Q: What brought you to Clovis?

A: I finished out my college basketball career at Eastern New Mexico University. And then the community grew on me and I made some connections with people that inspired me into going into the educational field.

Q: What's your job?

A: I am coordinator of Elementary Youth Programs.

Right now we're starting up athletics with grades kindergarten through fifth.

We're wrapping up flag football, next is volleyball, then basketball, then track.

It also includes art programs.

Q: What do you do when you're not working?

A: If I get some time off, I just try to sit down and relax.

Q: Tell us about your family.

A: When people say family, the first thing that comes to me is my family motivation. My family is everything to me.

There's my mother, my two sisters and my little brother.

My mom and sister Denika live in California; my little brother, Malik, lives in Fresno, Calif. where he plays college football for Fresno State.

My sister Latisha lives in Texas.

My family is my rock.

Q: What's your idea of a perfect day?

A: Peace of mind.

Q: What's your favorite sport and why?

A: Basketball.

That's pretty much all I know.

I've been doing that my whole life.

It's one of the few sports where you don't need anybody to get better.

Q: What's the best gift you've been given?

A: The gift of getting another day.

Every day I get to wake up is a gift itself.

Q: What's your greatest individual accomplishment?

A: Just to be in a position where I can help others.

Q: What's your favorite smell?

A: A clean house.

Vacuumed, mopped, laundry done, everything wiped down.

Q: What's your favorite dish?

A: Seafood.

A seafood boil.

Lobster tail.

Q: What's your favorite place to vacation?

A: New York City, San Diego, Calif., and Dallas.

New York City reminds me somewhat of home, the bright lights and the pace.

San Diego for the weather and the scenery.

And in Dallas you get the best of both worlds, fast or slow pace.

Q: Garrick Sherrod's fantasy dinner: Who's there? And what's for dinner?

A: Everyone that I consider to be a true friend.

And we're having Carne Asada street tacos.

Q: What's your favorite saying or quote?

A: "Those who stand for nothing will fall for anything."

Q: We're wrapping up our interview. Any final thoughts?

A: I'm thankful for the new position I'm in.

I'm grateful for the ongoing support of the community of Clovis.

Our youth program will greatly benefit the youth in Clovis.
