Artesia sweeps PHS in soccer

Portales High's soccer girls aren't setting the world on fire just yet, but they're coming along well.

Facing Artesia in a District 4-4A match at the PHS pitch on Tuesday, the Lady Rams went into halftime tied 1-1 before the Lady Bulldogs scored three goals in a span of about nine minutes in the second stanza to claim a 4-1 victory.

First-year coach Laci Lozoya said it's clear her program is headed in the right direction.

"We're just going to keep working and keep getting better," she said. "We're definitely making progress. Hopefully, the second time through the district we'll be even better."

Junior forward/midfielder Maria Lujan put Portales (5-8, 0-2 district) in front with a goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Addyson Lujan in the 13th minute. That held up until freshman midfielder/defender Kaidence Hnulik equalized with just under two minutes left in the half.

Junior forward Myra Garcia, junior defender Casey Dickson and sophomore Abigail Jowers took the suspense out of the match with second-half tallies for the Lady Bulldogs (10-3-2, 2-0) just past the midway point of the second canto.

Artesia had slim advantages of 10-7 in shots on goal and 4-2 in corners. Junior goalkeeper Lissette Gomez compiled six saves for the Lady Rams.

PHS returns to action on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. district tilt at Lovington.
