78-year-old woman shot to death in Clovis

A 78-year-old Clovis woman was shot to death Wednesday night as she answered her front door about 7 p.m. in the 1300 block of Traver Street, police said.

Police identified the victim as Virginia Montoya. She suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest and died at Plains Regional Medical Center, police said.

The shooting was reported by the victim's 80-year-old husband.

No suspect was in custody as of 9:30 p.m.

"Residents in the Traver area are asked to review their home security camera systems in the event their systems captured any relevant images," police asked residents.

The Major Crimes Unit was activated to assist police with the investigation.

Police said it was not immediately clear whether the victim was the intended target of the killer.

It marked Clovis' third homicide this year. Two women were killed in Ned Houk Park in May and a teenager was shot to death outside the Clovis Apartments early last month.

The Ned Houk suspect is in custody in Albuquerque where he faces multiple federal charges. The suspect in the September slaying, Giovanni Brown-Johnson, 18, remained at large this week, police said.

We'll have more information as it becomes available.
