Abandoned home damaged by fire

Fire caused extensive damage to an abandoned home near Sixth and Prince streets in Clovis on Sunday night.

Firefighters responded to the scene about 6:15 p.m. Flames were visible coming from the roof of the structure along with heavy smoke, which could be seen for blocks.

The blaze appeared to be contained by 7 p.m.

Clovis Deputy Fire Chief Terrance Lizardo said no one was living in the home and “the ceiling was missing, which was why it headed out the roof so fast.”

Lizardo said authorities on Monday had not determined a cause or where the fire started, but said the structure will be “a total loss.”

One man was arrested while firefighters were on the scene. Clovis police said the man said he wanted to help fight the fire, but he appeared to be intoxicated.
