Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team played 14th-ranked Angelo State tough for two sets on Saturday, but the Rambelles pulled away to post a 23-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-13 Lone Star Conference victory at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.
It was the first ranked opponent for the Greyhounds (3-12, 0-4 LSC) this season. Senior outside hitter Darcy Dodd had 13 kills for ENMU, while senior outside hitter Halle Sanders just missed a double-double with nine kills and 11 digs.
Meantime, freshman setter Cayla Reyes also posted a double-double (12 assists, 15 digs) and freshman setter Angelina Sanchez fell one dig shot (11 assists, nine digs).
Angelo State (13-2, 3-1), coming off a three-set loss at No. 9 West Texas A&M on Thursday, was paced by sophomore outside hitter Madi Parrish with 17 kills and senior outside hitter Evelyn Torres with 15 kills and 20 digs. Junior outside hitter Kaila Garnett added 10 kills and senior defensive specialist Caleigh Enax matched Torres with 20 digs.
ENMU trailed much of the first set, but kept it close and, at 23-23, took the game on Dodd’s kill and an ASU attack error.
After the Rambelles opened a 6-2 lead in Game 2, the Hounds rallied back to lead with five consecutive points and eventually opened a 16-13 advantage. Angelo countered with an 8-2 run and held off the Hounds late.
Game 3 was tied twice, the latter at 11-11, but the Rambelles finished on a 14-4 run. The fourth set was also tied twice early before ASU, leading 13-10, tallied 12 of the final 15 points, including three consecutive kills by Parrish for a 22-12 cushion.
ENMU visits Cameron in a 5 p.m. (MDT) start tonight before hosting No. 9 West Texas A&M at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Cross country – ENMU’s men were second out of four teams while the women finished third out of five in Saturday’s Greyhound Invite cross country meet on the ENMU campus.
Amarillo College took both divisions of the meet, scoring 21 points to 43 for ENMU, 66 for University of the Southwest and 101 for Northern New Mexico in men’s competition and 30 points to 50 for Midwestern State, 62 for the Hounds, 83 for Texas-Permian Basin and 125 for Northern New Mexico on the women’s side.
Freshman Bryan Hernandez led the Hounds in the men’s race, placing fifth in the 8K event with a time of 29 minutes, 34.3 seconds. Also, freshman Justin Sauceda was eighth in 30:15.7, freshman Jackson Gable ninth in 30:25.4, freshman Thomas Aerdts 13th in 31:44.3, sophomore Brian Norton 16th in 32:12.4 and senior Ethan Woodrome 20th in 32:46.9.
In the women’s 6K, freshman Elizabeth Lujan-Towles paced ENMU, placing fifth in 25:33.7, while freshman Sylvia Lagat was seventh in 25:53.9, senior Sanne Janssen eighth in 25:58.9, freshman Valentina Rocabado Salazar 24th in 30:27.9 and freshman Faith Jepchirchir 27th in 31:18.5.
A total of 29 men and 35 women competed in the event. Individual winners, both from Amarillo College, were freshmen Lane Kenney (27:10.4) for the men and Mia Lujan (24:42.6) for the women.
Next up for the Hounds is their regular-season finale on Saturday in the New Mexico Junior College Invitational at Hobbs. The women’s 5K race starts at 9 a.m., followed by the men’s 8K at 9:45 a.m.
