ENMU men, women shut out at home

Eastern New Mexico University’s soccer teams were both at home on Saturday, but neither could dent the scoreboard as the ENMU men dropped a 1-0 decision to St. Mary’s while the women were blanked by Texas-Tyler 2-0 in Lone Star Conference tilts at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium.

In the men’s contest, St. Mary’s (6-2-2, 2-0 LSC) managed only three shots on goal to just one for the Greyhounds (2-3-3, 1-1). The Rattlers broke through in the 60th minute when senior midfielder Juan Jose Valdez Lopez beat ENMU freshman keeper Milo Paci on a shot from about 30 yards out.

Paci finished with two saves while Rattlers junior goalkeeper Johnny Thurbin had one.

ENMU travels to St. Edward’s on Wednesday before hosting Texas A&M International in a 6 p.m. start on Saturday.

In the women’s match, Tyler (7-1-1, 2-1-1) scored one early and another one late to hold off the Hounds (2-5-1, 1-3).

The Patriots posted a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-0 margin in corner kicks.

Junior forward Brooke Mullins got St. Mary’s on the board in the ninth minute, taking a pass from junior defender Natalie Jones and heading the ball in past ENMU freshman keeper Rosie Willmott Joyce. Jones also assisted on the clinching goal, crossing the ball to senior midfielder Mackenzee Stokes who found senior forward Samaris Alvarado open for the goal inside the 18-yard box.

ENMU hosts Midwestern State in a 7 p.m. clash on Wednesday before traveling to St. Edward’s on Saturday.
