Lady Cats edge Hobbs for team title

ARTESIA – Clovis High’s girls used a 2-3-4 individual finish to squeak out a team victory while senior Sammy Fuentes’ individual title helped the CHS boys finish second in Artesia’s Twilight Invitational cross country meet on Friday.

The Lady Wildcats finished with 49 points to edge Hereford by a point for team honors in the eight-school girls race. Meantime, Hobbs ran away with the boys’ team title with 44 points, while the Wildcats nipped Carlsbad for second place 81-80 in a 10-team field.

Sophomore Brooke Newcomer led the Lady Cats in the 3.05-mile course, posting a time of 19 minutes, 37 seconds to finish behind Artesia’s Makaylee Morillon (18:51) in a field of 68 runners.

Freshman Roselia Morales (20:04) was third and senior Gabi Foggie fourth (20:22). Other finishes for the Lady Cats included junior Jarelly Navarrete, 16th in 21:26; freshman Jelena Maldonado, 24th in 22:03; senior Kira Tree, 25th in 22:04, and junior Joselyn Foggie, 30th in 22:25.

“They ran well,” CHS coach Liz Ledezma said of her squad. “It was a dark course, so it was hard to see.”

Fuentes posted a time of 15:29 for a 31-second margin over runnerup Elias Madrid of Hobbs. There were 71 runners in the boys race.

Freshman Marquez Lipman was 13th for the Cats in 17:20, while freshman Adrian Surita was 16th in 17:36, senior Victor Sanchez came in 17th in 17:38, senior Rudy Ledezma was 33rd in 18:16, freshman Connor McQuiggan was 35th in 18:17 and eighth-grader Alex Olivas Hita placed 42nd in 18:53.

Portales High had runners in boys competition for the first time this fall, with Leo Cordova finishing 23rd in 18:01, Allister McCasland placing 28th in 18:12 and Thomas Villalobos running 58th in 19:55.

Meantime, the Lady Rams had four entrants, led by junior Miriam Caudillo (23:29) and freshman Brianna Aguilar (23:42). Also, freshman Kloe Smith came in 50th in 26:33 and junior Rita Garza was 54th in 26:56.

Clovis and Portales runners will be back in action on Friday in the Bob Jackson Invite at Hobbs.
