Lady Cats fall in three sets in dual at Friona

FRIONA – Clovis High’s volleyball team took a while to get going, and by the time it did the hole was a bit too step for them to climb out.

Texas Class 3A power Friona dominated the opening set, then kept the Lady Wildcats at bay the rest of the way to claim a 25-10, 25-22, 25-20 victory on Saturday.

Playing without senior hitter Ashlynn Evans (shoulder) and a couple of other regulars, the Lady Cats (6-9) didn’t have enough firepower to stay with the Squaws (25-7), who are ranked 29th out of 200 schools in Texas Class 3A.

“We had to get used to each other,” CHS coach Cristy Hill said. “(In) Games 2 and 3 we kind of settled in and did a good job.

“They had some pretty big hitters, but in Games 2 and 3 we played pretty good.”

Senor Samantha Albert led Clovis with three kills, while junior Brynn Petner collected four digs and two aces. Freshman setter Ashlyn Salazar notched eight assists.

Next up for the Lady Cats is a 6 p.m. clash at Lovington on Thursday night.
