Lady Rams go 1-2 In Goddard event

ROSWELL – Portales High finished 1-2 over the weekend in Roswell Goddard’s six-team volleyball invitational.

The Lady Rams lost to St. Michael’s 25-19, 25-18, 25-17 on Friday night, then went the distance to beat Artesia 21-25, 25-20, 25-16, 23-25, 15-9 before losing to the host Lady Rockets 25-23, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21 in Saturday matchups.

PHS coach Bailey Greenwalt said the event was not played in tournament format. Instead, each team faced three of the other five squads.

“Everyone there was a quality team,” she said. “Whoever you played was good, and it definitely made us better.”

Junior middle hitter Skyler Massey made the all-tournament teams and notched double-doubles in all three matches, posting 11 kills and 15 digs against St. Mike’s, a personal-best 31 kills and 11 digs against Artesia and 21 and 11 against Goddard. She also had six aces and two blocks for the weekend.

Senior setter Myleigh Banda also had three double-doubles, with 15 digs and 19 assists against St. Michael’s, 22 and 39 against Artesia and 11 and 35 against Goddard. Senior Angel Ornelas notched 79 digs for the weekend, including a personal-best 39 against Goddard, while senior Tya Rippee collected 47 kills in the three outings.

After back-to-back tournament weekends, the Lady Rams have just one match scheduled in a span of 16 days – Oct. 12 at Texico – before beginning their District 4-4 A slate on Oct. 22 at Artesia.
