LOVINGTON – Lovington got a pair of first-half goals from senior forward/defender Aileah Rubio and handed Portales High a 3-1 setback on Monday in District 4-4A girls soccer.
Rubio put the Lady Wildcats (2-13, 1-2 district) in front in the fifth minute, then gave them the lead for good with her second tally in the 28th minute.
Sophomore midfielder Addyson Mayberry’s goal pulled the Lady Rams (5-9, 0-3) even in the 25th minute of the contest. Senior midfielder Kira Vazquez provided an insurance tally for Lovington about midway through the second half.
Lovington outshot Portales 11-9 on goal. Junior goalkeeper Lissette Gomez had eight saves for the Lady Rams.
Having completed the first time through the district, Portales hopes to get things turned around when it hosts Roswell Goddard in a 10 a.m. start on Saturday at the PHS pitch.
“We’re starting our next round of district,” Lady Rams coach Laci Lozoya said. “We’re just going to move on and try to get some wins this next time through.”
Lovington 10, Portales 0 (boys, Saturday) – The visiting Wildcats opened a 6-0 halftime lead and eventually ended the contest on the 10-goal mercy rule.
Six players tallied for Lovington (8-7, 3-0 district), led by junior Alejandro Mendoza with four goals. Senior Israel Borunda added two tallies while juniors Matthew Contreras and Payton Hernandez, sophomore Brandon Banuelos and eighth-grader Manuel Armendariz all scored once.
The next outing for Portales (4-10, 0-3) is on Thursday when it hosts Roswell Goddard in a 3 p.m. tilt.
