Clovis Municipal Schools Board of Education is scheduled to meet Oct. 22 to consider whether to name the high school football field in honor of former Coach Eric Roanhaus.
“We talked about this at the September meeting,” Board President Cindy Osburn told The News on Thursday.
“Two of our members, Shawn Hamilton and Paul Cordova, were going to look into the matter (options).
“It is a consideration item at our (Oct. 22) meeting,” she said.
Social media reports claiming the decision has already been made are inaccurate, school officials have said.
Board member Terry Martin said he has concerns about costs associated with signage if the field now known as Leon Williams Stadium is renamed or if the Roanhaus name is added to the facility.
He said no decision about naming the field has been made, but confirmed the issue will be discussed again Oct. 22.
School Superintendent Renee Russ told The News in an email:
“(I)tems requiring a vote by the school board are typically introduced and discussed in one meeting, with further deliberation and a vote occurring in a subsequent meeting.
“At the September board meeting, the item ‘Introduce request to honor Coach Roanhaus’ was presented as an introductory agenda item for discussion, with no board action taken at that time. Several ideas were exchanged, and requests were made for additional information to be collected and presented at the October meeting.”
Roanhaus’ teams won 343 games, including 10 state championships, during his 39 years as the Wildcats’ head coach.
The Oct. 22 meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. at Clovis Municipal Schools District Board Room, 1009 Main St.
