On this date …

1941: New Mexico’s state game commission had announced the 1941 quail season had been canceled.

The decision was made “reluctantly,” wire services reported, because quail populations had suffered from heavy rains and flooding during the nesting season in the spring and again in September.

Game Warden Elliott Barker said the birds had been recovering nicely until the September storms “virtually wiped them out.”

1960: David Thompson and Marsha Simms, both 11, were among Parkview Elementary School students practicing for their performance of the operetta “Twilight Alley.”

The performance was scheduled for the next day at Marshall Junior High.

1962: Les Brown and his Band of Renown were headliners for a dance at the Cannon Air Force Base officers’ club held in celebration of the base’s 20th anniversary.

Brown and his band were well known sidekicks of Bob Hope on radio and television, and in countless United Service Organization tours at military bases across the United States and around the world.

The Band of Renown was formed in 1940, and featured Butch Stone, Susan Maro, and Stumpy Brown.

1966: Levine’s department store in Clovis was hosting a “gigantic” 34th birthday sale.

The Main Street store was open until 8 p.m. all week.

• Plastic drapes, 38 cents.

• Ladies’ laminated dress coats, $14.88

1972: Al Haley, manager of Commonwealth Theaters in Clovis, and Jimmy Self, promotion director for the Hilltop Plaza Shopping Center, were looking over plans for a new entertainment facility that was planned for the shopping center.

Construction was set to begin in mid-November, with a completion date of March 1973, for a theater they said would provide two movies simultaneously and seat approximately 300 persons in each side.

The district manager for Commonwealth said the theater would be only the third twin facility in the state of New Mexico.

1974: Ten area cyclists had ridden their bikes from Clovis to Melrose and back to raise money for Curry County United Way.

The bikers each had sponsors who paid them $1 per mile for the trip.

Officials said they raised about $550 for the cause.

Riders were Dick Reeves, Ray Kimbrell, Ken Light, Tom Vincent, Dallas Anderson, Phil Anderson, Susan Totoritis, Larry Razlera, Jeff Gray and Les Baldock.

1975: Hy-Tones Music Studios was preparing for its grand opening at Clovis’ Mini Mall, 412 Main.

Hy-Tones would carry Thomas organs and Baldwin pianos.

The grand opening included free key chains, balloons and refreshments. A piano was being raffled with tickets selling for $100.

1990: Eastern New Mexico University had implemented a drug and alcohol awareness program.

“It’s our responsibility to promote responsible drinking — that if you choose to drink, these are some of the things that will happen to you,” said ENMU President Thomas Bond.
