ENMU runners compete in NMJC event

HOBBS – Seven Eastern New Mexico University runners – four for the men, three for the women – took part in the New Mexico Junior College Invitational cross country meet on Friday. It was the Greyhounds’ final tuneup before the Lone Star Conference meet, scheduled for Oct. 26 at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

In the men’s 8-kilometer event, featuring 53 finishers, all four ENMU contestants were bunched in the 40s – freshman Bryan Hernandez, 41st in a time of 28 minutes, 35.1 seconds; freshman Justin Sauceda, 45th in 29:09.6; freshman Jackson Gable, 46th in 29:42.2, and senior Ethan Woodrome, 49th in 31:35.8.

In the women’s 5K race, which had 57 contestants, three freshmen ran for the Hounds – Sylvia Lagat, 23rd in 20:40.50; Elizabeth Lujan Towles, 28th in 20:43.7, and Sanne Janssen, 36th in 21:49.2.

Host NMJC took both team titles, winning with 31 points to 62 for Wayland Baptist in men’s competition and 33 points to 42 for Texas Tech on the women’s side. Five full men’s and six full women’s squads competed.

Individual winners were Bradley Makuvire, unattached, in 22:45.6 for the men and Odessa College freshman Elizabeth Alanda in 17:16.3 for the women.

Rodeo – Tularosa sisters Shacie and Shaeden Marr combined for all 70 points over the weekend as ENMU’s women finished fifth in the three-day Clarendon College rodeo.

Shaeden Marr split second and third in Thursday’s first round in breakaway roping, then split fifth and sixth in the average to account for 60 of the team’s points, while Shacie split fifth, sixth and seventh in goat-tying, posting a 6.5-second run in the final round.

Cisco College took the women’s team title with 275 points, followed by West Texas A&M (200), Texas Tech (165), New Mexico Junior College (80) and ENMU.

Tarleton State ran away with men’s team honors with 625 points to 420 for Western Texas College. ENMU’s men did not score in the event.

The Greyhounds return to action Oct. 24-26 in Lubbock at the Texas Tech rodeo.
