Hounds slip past Dustdevils 2-1

Freshman Nathan Le Roux scored with just over five minutes left and the Eastern New Mexico University men's soccer team edged Texas A&M International 2-1 on Saturday at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium for its first Lone Star Conference victory of the season.

Senior Loris Tsiatsipy played a long diagonal pass forward, drawing the Dustdevils out of the 18-yard box and leaving Le Roux open for a shot into an empty net. It was his first collegiate tally.

ENMU (3-3-4, 1-1-1 LSC) struck in the final minute of the half when it was awarded a penalty kick. Junior Alexandre Meres was fouled as he attempted to shoot, and placed the penalty kick into the bottom left corner of the net for his first goal of the season to break the scoreless tie.

The Dustdevils (2-6-2, 0-3-1) pulled even in the 76th minute on an own goal, when a free kick bounced off a Greyhounds defender and trickled into the net.

Tonight, the Hounds play at home again when they host Oklahoma Christian in a 6 p.m. start.

Women – At Austin, Texas, St. Edward's freshman Annie Rocha broke through for a pair of second-half goals and the Hilltoppers defeated ENMU 2-0 on Saturday.

St. Ed's (3-6-2, 1-4-1) peppered the net with eight shots on frame in the first half, but ENMU freshman keeper Rosie Willmott Joyce was equal to the task.

However, it took the Hilltoppers less than three minutes to break through when play resumed. A steal led to a breakout for St. Ed's, with freshman midfielder/defender Tristyn Cabello finding Rocha just inside the box for the first tally.

About 15 minutes later, SEU freshman forward Isabella Ruiz delivered a cross to Ruiz for a header and her eighth goal of the campaign.

St. Ed's outshot ENMU (2-7-1, 1-5) on goal 10-1 and had a 4-2 edge in corners.

ENMU's next outing is in a 6 p.m. (MDT) start today against Texas Woman's in Denton, Texas.
