Lady Cats post win in meet at Hobbs

HOBBS – Sophomore Brooke Newcomer led a dominating finish for Clovis High’s girls on Saturday and the Lady Wildcats earned the team title in Hobbs’ Bob Jackson Invitational cross country meet.

Newcomer posted a time of 20 minutes, 21.69 seconds over five kilometers, pacing a 1-2-4-6-8 finish for the team. Only three schools had full teams for the girls, with Carlsbad second at 62 and Roswell High third at 104.

Freshman Roselia Morales was second in the event at 21:20.64, while senior Gabi Foggie placed fourth in 21:51.82, freshman Christina Waltrip sixth in 22:43.51, junior Jarelly Navarrete eighth in 23:03.89. Rounding out CHS performances were junior Jelena Maldonado, 11th in 23:45.33, and senior Kira Tree, 21st in 26:25.02.

Clovis’ boys came in third in a seven-team field with 78 points, trailing Hobbs (34) and Carlsbad (59). Rounding out team scores were Hagerman 106, Roswell High 108, Lovington 109 and Roswell Goddard 206.

Lovington’s Ethan Castellanos took individual honors with a time of 16:32.49. For the Wildcats, freshman Ryder Bonney was ninth in 18:42.27, freshman Connor McQuiggan 14th in 19:22.02, freshman Martin Perez 16th in 19:50.64, sophomore Isaiah Saiz in 19:59.64, sophomore Marcelo Rendon 22nd in 20:23.33 and freshman Silas Atikinson-Adams 27th in 28:34.27.

Clovis’ next outing is on Saturday in the Albuquerque Academy Extravaganza.
