Carlsbad forced overtime with a goal in the final three minutes of regulation, then scored again two minutes into sudden-death overtime to edge Clovis High 2-1 on Tuesday night in District 4-5A girls soccer at Leon Williams Stadium.
The win avenged a 3-2 setback to the Lady Wildcats in the district opener for both teams at Carlsbad on Oct. 1.
Junior forward Ava Evans split a pair of Carlsbad defenders and slipped the ball into the back of the net to give Clovis (5-11-2, 1-3 district) a 1-0 lead in the 67th minute.
"It was kind of a back-and-forth thing," Lady Cats coach Ray Rodriguez said of the contest. "We created a few chances in the first half, but we just didn't capitalize."
The game-winner was actually an own-goal by the Lady Cats, who gave Carlsbad (5-13, 1-3) the victory by inadvertently tipping the ball into their own net while trying to clear it in the OT session.
"We should've beaten Carlsbad," Rodriguez said. "We had our opportunities."
The Lady Cats hosted Hobbs on Saturday. They close out district and regular-season play on Tuesday at Roswell High.
Clovis 2, Carlsbad 0 (boys, Tuesday) – The Wildcats scored both of their goals in the opening half and kept their hopes alive for a Class 5A state tournament berth.
Senior forward Ihab Mesbah broke the ice in the 18th minute off an assist from junior forward/midfielder Julien Salinas. Junior forward Jose Herrera added the second tally, assisted by sophomore forward/midfielder Aldo Herrera, in the 29th minute.
CHS coach Greg Trujillo said the Cats were without four starters who had missed practice time. He said they adjusted with a new lineup.
"We went to a different formation," he said. "We were trying a couple of things to get ready for Hobbs and Roswell, and it worked."
Clovis posted a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal against the Cavemen (2-16, 0-4), and had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Senior keeper Angel Avila had three saves.
CHS played at Hobbs (11-6-1, 2-1-1) on Saturday and hosts Roswell High (13-4-1, 3-0-1) in a 6 p.m. tilt on Tuesday to finish the regular campaign.
"We need to get a result," Trujillo said. "I think if we can get one win, it should get us in (to the state meet)."
