Over the past 3 1/2 years, President Biden has regularly claimed credit for a foreign policy that in retrospect may not be all that successful. Biden takes credit for things like revitalizing NATO, providing proactive aid coordination for Ukraine and for global stability and U.S. leadership.
An accurate appraisal of the current situation finds some NATO states in the precarious condition of near de-militarization and inadequate preparedness for future conflicts due to sending arms and munitions to Ukraine, Ukraine facing defeat on the battlefield, and the Mid East threatening to explode into regional war.
A closer look at Ukraine shows that the Biden admin chose to back a Ukrainian regime that had never been an American ally in any conflict or confrontation with any enemy. Additionally, Ukraine was neither a member of NATO nor the European Union due to the fact that its army was composed of brigade sized units of NAZI sympathizers, and its government was widely recognized as the most corrupt country in Europe. The Azov Brigade rejected acceptance into NATO and the corruption excluded membership in the EU.
Today, we are told by Kamala Harris that the U.S. will not attempt negotiations with Russia unless Ukraine is included in these talks. When Ukraine and Russia attempted to negotiate bi-laterally via the Istanbul agreements in March 2022, the United States and Great Britian determined that the proposed pact was unacceptable. This resulted in the quagmire that has ensued, and guaranteed no acceptable off ramp.
It needs to be remembered that these policies are a joint endeavor of the Biden/Harris administration. Indeed, in their letter endorsing Kamala Harris for president, 10 retired flag officers wrote, “She has demonstrated her ability to take on the most difficult national security challenges in the Situation Room and on the international stage, from rallying our allies against Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine to standing shoulder to shoulder with our allies in the Indo-Pacific against China’s provocative actions, to advancing U.S. leadership on space and artificial intelligence.”
That pretty much implies that Harris played an integral part in all policy decisions.
Beginning with the fiasco of the Afghanistan withdrawal, the quagmire that is Ukraine and the disaster in the Middle East, I’m not sure the administration can claim global stability, and I’m absolutely positive they don’t want to claim U.S. leadership.
