Hobbs hands Cats, Lady Cats 2-1 losses

Clovis High’s soccer girls had Hobbs on the ropes for quite a while on Saturday, but they weren’t able to finish the Lady Eagles off.

Still, it was a significant improvement over the teams’ first meeting in Hobbs.

CHS led 1-0 at halftime, but the Lady Eagles mustered a couple of goals midway through the second canto to take a 2-1 victory in District 4-5A action at Leon Williams Stadium.

The district champion and Class 5A sixth-ranked Lady Eagles (16-3, 5-0 district) won the earlier matchup at home 6-0.

Lady Cats coach Ray Rodriguez was disappointed his squad didn’t have a better outcome this time.

“We were the better team on the field, no doubt about it,” he said. “They (Lady Eagles) just escaped with a win.”

Clovis (5-12-2, 1-4) got on the board with a goal from junior forward Kim Evans in the 26th minute, assisted by senior forward Natalie Griego. That lead held up until Hobbs freshman forward/midfielder Sophia Soto tied it in the 57th minute.

About three minutes later, senior defender Valerie Villalobos gave the Lady Eagles the lead.

“Our passing was accurate in the first half,” Rodriguez said. “In the second half, we kind of got away from what was working for us. We got away from our (individual) defending responsibilities, and that’s when the domino affect starts happening.”

Hobbs posted a 13-6 advantage in shots on goal and held a 3-2 margin in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Andrea Chavez collected 11 saves for the Lady Cats.

CHS was slated to travel to Roswell High for its district and season finale on Tuesday, but the match was postponed and will be played at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

In Saturday’s boys matchup at Hobbs, the Eagles (12-6-1, 3-1-1) posted a 2-1 victory over the Wildcats. CHS (13-5, 2-3) wraps up its regular-season slate on Thursday night against district-leading Roswell High (14-4-1, 4-0-1) at Leon Williams Stadium.

The boys tilt with district-leading Roswell High (14-4-1, 4-0-1) was also moved from Tuesday to Thursday at Leon Williams Stadium and will start at 6:30 p.m.
